Derek Rohaly - Head Director Mr. Rohaly is the newest member of the Mainland music staff. He has taught concert band, guitar, music theory, keyboards, freshman seminar, and music technology during the school day. After school, Mr. Rohaly directs the Mustang Marching Band and Jazz Prep Band.
Mr. Rohaly graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Minor in Music Technology. While at Penn Sate, he studied trumpet under Dr. Langston Fitzgerald III and performed in concert bands, orchestras, pit orchestras, jazz bands, brass quintets and a trumpet ensemble. He currently stays musically active playing trumpet in the South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble and Mainland’s annual musical production.
Mr. Rohaly enjoys music, playing his trumpet, DCI, running, hockey, college football and staying caught up-to-date with all areas of technology.
Marc Spatz - Assistant Director Mr. Spatz is the percussion and marching tech for the Mainland Marching Band. He graduated from West Chester University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Music Education. While at West Chester, Mr. Spatz performed with various jazz combos, the Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and the Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band (both in the drumline and in the front ensemble). He has taught general music and middle school choir and band in Absecon and North Wildwood. He currently teaches instrumental music and general music in the Atlantic City School District. Mr. Spatz also performs with the Philadelphia Wind Symphony and the South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble. Mr. Spatz enjoys music, kayaking, comedy, and technology.
Amy Melson - Assistant Director This is Ms. Melson’s first year on staff with the MRHS Marching Band as Assistant Director. Ms. Melson is currently the Choir Director at Mainland Regional HS. She also teaches Orchestral Strings, Keyboard, and Guitar. In addition she is the Vocal Music Director for the Spring Musical.
Ms. Melson graduated from Woodstown High School where she was actively involved in the choir and band programs including being Assistant Drum Major for the Marching Band. She has played flute for 10 years. After graduating Woodstown, she went to Messiah College for a degree in Music Education with a concentration in voice. After graduating she came to Mainland in November 2014 as a Long Term Substitute for the 2014-2015 school year.
Ms. Melson enjoys musical theater, rooting on the Phillies and Eagles, baking desserts and all things Disney!
David Lamkin - Brass Tech Mr. Lamkin is the music teacher at Seaview Elementary School in Linwood, NJ. He is also the assistant middle school band director at Belhaven Middle School and the assistant marching band director at Mainland. After graduating from Mainland, Mr. Lamkin attended Messiah College where he earned a degree in Music Education with a concentration in trumpet.
While at Messiah, Mr. Lamkin had the opportunity to perform at the 2009 International Trumpet Guild Conference, compete at the 2010 National Trumpet Competition, and tour the United States, Canada, and Germany with his brass quintet.
When Mr. Lamkin is not teaching, he enjoys spending time with his wife, golfing, playing and teaching the trumpet, and studying to become a school administrator.
